Hansen's Sno-Bliz (4801 Tchoupitoulas St., 891-9788) has a fresh coat of white paint on its exterior, which I know because some of it smeared onto my blue shirt when I burst into the place two weeks ago. There were no bounds to my excitement when I saw movement around the corner building that has stood vacant since last October when the season for chocolate cream sno-balls topped with sweetened condensed milk so abruptly came to a halt. If you've never experienced a Hansen's sweetened flurry-in-a-cup, the news that Ernest and Mary Hansen and their granddaughter Ashley are hoping to open April 14 might not change your Easter plans. On the other hand, if you're already composing a list of your favorite flavors, you'll be in raptures to learn that Hansen's is opening four days a week this season (Thursday through Sunday) instead of the traditional three. According to Ashley, whom her grandmother calls "our right arm," there also will be new T-shirts for sale, and possibly new cups. The rest, thank goodness, will stay the same. A few blocks away, Tee-Eva's (4430 Magazine St., 899-8350) also recently got a new paint job: loud yellow with polka dots and cartoonish characters giddy over sno-balls and steaming pies. Another Uptown institution, Tee-Eva's is open 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. seven days a week (sometimes closing earlier on Sundays). Take a look at their glossy Web site for mail order info and a picture of the walk-up shop before the new do: www.tee-eva.net.
It's usually their night off, but Chef Peter and wife Janis Vasquez will host a 90th birthday party for Tennessee Williams at their restaurant Marisol (437 Esplanade Ave., 943-1912) on Monday, March 26, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. (My apologies if you haven't picked up your Gambit in time; the news came in after press time for the March 20 issue.) In conjunction with the Faulkner Book House and the Library of America, the event is also the local debut of Kenneth Holditch and Mel Gussow's new two-volume work, Tennessee Williams: Plays 1937-1980. Signed copies of the book will be available. In addition, actors Harry Anderson (Night Court) and Gerald McRaney (Simon and Simon), and writers Sheila Bosworth (Slow Poison, Almost Innocent) and Patty Friedmann (Odds), will read from Williams' works. The Vasquezes will provide hors d'oeuvres for the event and open Marisol's bar for cash sales. Call Midi South of France (614 Canal St., 527-6712) to sign up for their new monthly wine seminars. Sommelier Alain Pirony will lead attendees through ports and Madeiras in April, Burgundies in May and wines from Australia and New Zealand in June (the list goes on). The wines will be served with select cheeses, fruits and hors d'oeuvre at $25 per seminar. Chef Allan Hegquist of the Red Room (2040 St. Charles Ave., 528-9759) will be on hand to demonstrate cooking with strawberries for the Crescent City Farmers Market's "Strawberry Sellebration" at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 31. The following Tuesday, at the Uptown Market, stop by for a Q & A with the chefs from Nautical (7708 Maple St. 866-7504) at noon. The Saturday Market is located at 700 Magazine Street and runs from 8 a.m. to 12 noon; Tuesday's Market is located at 200 Broadway and runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Call 861-5898 or visit www.loyno.edu/ccfm for more information.
