Living -- and Learning --Downstream

Contributed by Shala Carlson and Allen Johnson, Jr

On Saturday, Sept. 22, a regional conference of the Minneapolis-based Mississippi River Basin Alliance will be held at Tulane University. The conference promises to enlighten participants on issues affecting the health of the river and the many communities that depend on it. Sessions will cover topics including the Gulf of Mexico dead zone, farming for the future, environmental justice, greenways and habitat protection, and more.

State Rep. Kip Holden, a member of the House Environmental Committee, will deliver the conference's opening address; in the past, Holden has been honored as an outstanding legislator by the Sierra Club and has received the Louisiana Brown Pelican Award. John Barry, author of Rising Tide: The Great Flood of 1927 and How It Changed America, will offer the lunch keynote address and a preview of the National Center for the Mississippi River.

Conference fees are $10 for students, $25 for members and $30 for non-members. For more information, call 588-9008 or visit www.mrba.org.
