Holy Cross High School faculty and staff

recently traveled to eight locations across the city during a community service day called "Leading and Teaching Through Example." Teachers and staff members tackled projects such as volunteering with kids at Children's Hospital and St. Michael's Special School, cleaning up Bayou St. John, and painting houses in the Ninth Ward.

DynMcDermott Petroleum Operations Co.

donated $5,000 to a Louisiana National Guard fund that finances a boot-camp style reform program for high school dropouts. The Louisiana National Guard Youth Challenge Program places at-risk youths in a disciplined military environment for 17 months. Participants can achieve a high school equivalency diploma, job training, or entry-level work placement.

Kevin Andrepont,

the onetime chief financial officer of Baton Rouge Water Co., has been sentenced to a year in federal prison for using utility funds to pay his credit-card bills and other personal expenses. Andrepont, who served as vice president and CFO of the utility from 1993 until last year, embezzled the money via 15 water company checks, prosecutors said.

Arsonists and vandals,

upset with a new environmental policy banning motor vehicles from driving on a four-mile stretch of eroding shoreline in Lafourche Parish, torched grasses and destroyed fenceposts installed to protect the fragile coastal land. Officials have reported several fires burning in grasslands that were planted to hold the sand in place, and said vandals used a chainsaw to destroy fencing designed to keep vehicles off the beach.
