The Louisiana Supreme Court recently added Brian D. Perry Sr. to a list of attorneys who are eligible to sit as temporary judges for Orleans Parish Juvenile Court. But in the wake of the Sept. 11 attacks, the attorney has been called up from another list -- the military reserves.

Perry, a lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Army Reserves now stationed in Florida, says his commander allowed him to return to New Orleans for a week last month. While on leave, Perry served as a temporary judge on Sept. 24 and Sept. 25 for Juvenile Court Judge Yvonne Hughes, who had a death in her family, records show.

Back on military duty, Perry is awaiting further orders. In 1991, he was both an assistant city attorney and a Army reserve major when he was called up for the Gulf War. He was stationed in Saudi Arabia, where he remained for seven years after the war, working as a security adviser to Aramco, a Saudi Arabian oil company.

Perry returned to New Orleans in 1998. Last fall, he ran for the judicial seat won by Hughes, a Democrat. Perry, a Republican, says there is no quid pro quo in his temporary appointment to the bench. "I was flattered that Judge Hughes asked me to serve," he adds.
