Falesco
Merlot-Umbria 2000
$13-$17
This is the Italian wine you've been waiting for. Like our favorite California Merlots, it's a regular fruit bomb, all murky and dark with the deep purples of black cherries, blackberries and prunes. But there's also the restraint of a less youthful wine country -- an almost minty mellowness even without food, and a deliberate, split-second tannic bite at the end, as if to remind us to taste what we drink. Perfect with barbecued pork. Found at Langenstein's, Martin Wine Cellar and Whole Foods Market. -- Roahen
