Castello D'Albola
Chianti Classico 1999
$12-$15 Syrupy-sweet vanilla, cherries, plums -- this medium-bodied Chianti smells like all cough medicines would taste in a perfect world. Damp violets, pleasant pepper and warm plums characterize its best qualities of taste; there's also some sourness, powerful tannins and a raisin flavor that will mellow out with age. Look for a lingering bottle of 1998's smoother vintage for proof. Drink either bottle with braised lamb shanks, garlicky tomato sauces and strong cheeses. Found at Antonio's Wine Cellar, Cellars of River Ridge, Elio's Wine Warehouse, Prytania Liquor Store, Vieux Carre Wine & Spirits and selected Sav-A-Center locations. -- Roahen
