2001 Kim Crawford Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc
New Zealand
$14-$16
Talk about transparent; this wine is reminiscent of that old song "A Whiter Shade of Pale." The crisp Sauvignon Blanc's color belies the intensity of aromas that assail one's sense of smell: the anticipated grassiness accompanied by peach and apricot, lime, and a hint of herbaceousness. On the palate, the classic varietal character of the grape shines through in a stylish balance of ripe fruit and crisp acidity, rounded texture with a lingering finish. Cool fermented from 100 percent Sauvignon Blanc grapes grown in Marlborough's Wairau and Brancott valleys. Rated 89 by Wine Spectator. A great aperitif and good food match with smoked salmon and capers, chevre, asparagus, crab dip, and sushi. Available at Dorignac's, Foodie's Kitchen, Cellars of River Ridge, and Hugh's Wines in Mandeville. Also on the following wine lists: Commander's Palace, Charley G's, Palace Cafe, The Porthole in Slidell.
