The Best and the Worst of the Week

The "Servathon" partnership ,
composed of volunteers from Tulane University, the Sodexho hospitality corporation and Habitat for Humanity, donated a full day's construction to the creation of a Habitat for Humanity home in New Orleans. Sodexho, of Gaithersburg, Md., also provided dinner for five weeks to collegiate volunteers who built homes over spring break. Habitat for Humanity plans to sell the home at zero interest to a local family.

Jeanne Culotta ,
a longtime volunteer for Goodwill Industries, the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation, the Cancer Crusaders, the Ladies Leukemia League and other organizations, was honored for her dedication last week through a special recognition award from Goodwill Industries Volunteer Services. The award lauded the Slidell woman's fundraising and leadership skills.

Dr. Tyler Curiel
won the 125-mile Mardi Gras Ultra Distance Classic from Baton Rouge to New Orleans and set a new course record, while raising money for research at the Tulane Cancer Center. Curiel, chief of the Section of Hematology-Oncology in the Medicine Department of the Tulane School of Medicine, is renowned for innovative therapies for cancers and infectious diseases. The distance runner finished the race in 24 hours, 50 minutes and 30 seconds.

Dallas Clyde Adams and Latasha Kaufman
both pleaded guilty to Social Security fraud in unrelated incidents in which they tried to steal the identities of dead people. Both Baton Rouge residents were sentenced to federal prison last week. Adams was arrested while trying to open a savings account and safety deposit box using the identity of a dead person. Kaufman altered her late sister's identification card and used the fake ID to cash Social Security checks.
