The Best and the Worst of the Week

the New Orleans Fire Department superintendent, was named Metropolitan Fire Chief of the Year recently at the annual Metro Fire Chiefs Conference. McDaniels, who received the award at the international group's recent conference in Hawaii, was lauded for his leadership, his service to the organization and his promotion of fire safety.
Ellis L. Marsalis Jr. ,
is this year's selection for the U.S. Postal Service's annual Commemorative Souvenir Envelope. The envelope, issued jointly by the USPS and the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Foundation, honors noted ambassadors of New Orleans music. The jazz pianist is chairman of the Louisiana Music Commission and former director of the Jazz Studies program at the University of New Orleans.
Gregory O'Brien ,
Chancellor of the University of New Orleans, was selected to receive this year's Governor Jimmie Davis Sunshine Award, established by Gov. Mike Foster to honor leaders in public service, humanitarianism or civic works. O'Brien was selected for his achievements in economic development for New Orleans, particularly his role in the creation of the UNO Research and Technology Park and his promotion of public-private partnerships.
Duke Ellington Tilley Jr. ,
a Baton Rouge lawyer, was unanimously disbarred by the state Supreme Court for "serious professional misconduct." Justices said Tilley mismanaged client and third-party funds, failed to communicate with clients, and engaged in conflicts of interest. The high court also cited Tilley's disciplinary record and resistance to comply with its investigation.
