The Best and the Worst of the Week
Kix Brooks ,
one-half of the award-winning country music duo Brooks and Dunn, recently became the youngest recipient of Louisiana Tech's highest honor, the Tower Medallion. Brooks, a Louisiana native, has previously been named "Alumni of the Year" by Louisiana Tech's Art School. Brooks is the 59th recipient of the Tower Medallion in the university's history.
The 2002 Mayor's Arts Awards Recipients ,
recognized for their contributions to local arts, include Lifetime Achievement Award winners Mr. and Mrs. Moise S. Steeg, corporate winner BellSouth, painter Willie Birch, actress and storyteller Adella Gautier, arts advocate Judith S. Newman, and the Tennessee Williams/New Orleans Literary Festival. Mayor Ray Nagin presented the awards at a recent luncheon.
Elizabeth Frank ,
a Tulane University senior and Mandeville native, has been awarded a prestigious Fulbright Fellowship. The award will provide funding for her to work as a high school English teaching assistant in Germany after she graduates this spring. The national Fulbright program provides opportunities for young scholars to gain a greater understanding of other countries.
Louisiana
consistently ranks among the bottom 10 states when it comes to investing in children's future, according to a 2002 report released by the Children's Defense Fund. Louisiana falls in the bottom 10 for children living in poverty, children with no health insurance, low birthweight babies, children born to unmarried parents, teen births, infant mortality, and cash assistance for the working poor.
