1999 EOS Reserve Petite Sirah
Paso Robles, California

$19-$21
Often confused with the intensely popular Syrahs, Sirahs and Shiraz, petite sirah formerly grew in France's Midi as the durif grape, coming to California primarily as a blending grape. This wine, a blend of 87 percent petite sirah and 13 percent zinfandel, opens with a wild black cherry, chocolate/mocha, chalky aroma, followed by huge blackberry, currant and spicy flavors with hints of toast from the 16-month American and French barrel aging, followed by a touch of Amarone-like sweetness on the finish. Bold and full-bodied, it will improve with additional cellaring. Good with roast pork and applesauce, barbecued red meats, duck a l'orange, venison with cranberries and spicy Thai or Tex-Mex cuisine. Available at Dorignac's, Antonio's on the West Bank, Hugh's Wine Cellar in Mandeville and Habanos in Slidell. -- Brenda Maitland
