Yours, Truly
Six restaurants will prepare variations on Louis Armstrong's favorite dish -- red beans and rice -- at the free, second annual Satchmo SummerFest this Thursday through Sunday, held at the Louisiana State Museum's Old U.S. Mint. Look for Belle Forche, Crescent City Brewhouse, Greco's, Pat O'Brien's, Praline Connection and Royal Cafe in the festival's Red Bean Alley, serving dishes like red bean ice cream, red bean egg rolls and red bean jambalaya. Several local chefs are offering additional Satchmo favorites, including peach Melba and fried chicken, within their restaurants Thursday-Monday, Aug. 1-5. Restaurants participating in these Sizzlin' Satchmo Specials include Belle Forche, Broussard's, Dickie Brennan's Steakhouse, Ritz-Carlton New Orleans' French Quarter Bar, Gabrielle, Muriel's, Palace Cafe, Veranda and Grill Room. For more information, call 522-5730 or log on at www.satchmosummerfest.com.

Struttin' Their Stuff
On Friday, Aug. 2, from 7:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m., join Les Colonello and his Royal Garden Jazz Band for the Satchmo Club Strut at Marisol (437 Esplanade Ave., 943-1912), across from the Mint. The band will also play during brunch on the following Sunday. While you're there, check out specialty cocktails by new bartender Sara Trahan. Her Adam and Eve is made with Black Mission figs and Calvados.

Lighten Up
Wolfe's of New Orleans (7224 Pontchartrain Blvd., Metairie, 284-6004) is featuring light wines during this Wednesday's five-course, $85 Cool Midsummer's Night Wine Dinner: a 2002 Malvasia Bianca from Wild Horse, a 1999 Equus Viognier, a 2002 Faiveley Pinot Noir and a 1998 Silverado Cabernet Sauvignon. All wines were chosen to complement chef-owner Tom Wolfe's culinary arrangements.

Dog Gone It
Restaurant August (see review) relieves the "dog days of summer" with a discount. Here's how it works: Pick a card from a doggie water bowl at the entrance. If you choose a Chihuahua, you get $5 off your meal. Mid-size dog cards save you $7, and large breeds like St. Bernards and Afghans knock $9 off.

Market Watch
This Tuesday, meet Cafe Reconcile's (1631 Oretha Castle Haley Blvd.,568-1157) new chef, Don Boyd, during a 10 a.m. cooking demonstration at the Crescent City Farmers Market. On Saturday at 10 a.m., Ken Koenig will demonstrate the advantages of hand-feeding companion birds. The Tuesday market is at 200 Broadway St. and runs from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The Saturday market is at 700 Magazine St. and runs from 8 a.m. to noon. Call 861-5898 or visit www.loyola.edu/ccfm.
