1998 Rupert & Rothchild Vignerons, Classique
South Africa

$18-$20
After 350 years of winemaking, South Africa represents some of the oldest "New World" wine producers. The French heritage from early settlers and Huguenot followers remains vivid in this Meritage from the southern tip of South Africa around Cape Town. The Classique, with 60 percent Cabernet Sauvignon and 40 percent Merlot, typifies a classic Bordeaux blend with its dark fruit, cedar and tobacco aromas. On the palate, the wine is full and rich with ripe plum, nuances of red cherries and spice, offering a velvety mouth feel and even tannins. Drink now, but it will age well in the bottle. The 2001 New Orleans Wine & Food Experience "Best of Show" Meritage winner. Good with steaks, stews, and any roasted meats and rich cheeses. Available at The Wine Cellar and Acquistapace's Covington Super Market. -- Brenda Maitland
