The Best and the Worst of the Week
The Canal Street streetcar expansion project has been lauded by the Sierra Club for providing environmentally sound public transportation. In a study released last week, the national conservation group praised the streetcar expansion and 20 other projects across the nation. Coincidentally, the report also urged Louisiana to scrap a planned highway linking Bogalusa to Interstate 12 in St. Tammany Parish, recommending instead that a light-rail system connect both locations to New Orleans.
East Jefferson General Hospital
has been designated a "magnet" hospital -- able to attract and retain skilled, quality nurses -- by the American Nurses Credentialing Center. The Washington, D.C.-based professional organization has accorded "magnet" status to 55 health-care facilities around the country. East Jefferson is the only hospital in Louisiana to achieve the distinction.
Public officials in Louisiana at all levels of government routinely violate the state's open-meetings and public-records laws, according to a recent study by the nonpartisan Public Affairs Research Council. The group says that violations of the state "sunshine" laws occur more out of ignorance than willful disregard and suggests that Attorney General Richard Ieyoub's office needs to better train public employees to prevent "inadvertent violations of the law."
Gov. Mike Foster , commenting on an apparent serial killer who has murdered three Louisiana women, made national headlines last week by encouraging women to pack guns. His comments came during his weekly radio show, in response to a victim's mother who asked Foster to help coordinate law enforcement agencies to catch the killer. Foster instead should assure his citizens of a competent and coordinated investigation.
