this week is presenting the Joseph S. Clark and Booker T. Washington high school bands with instruments the club purchased with the proceeds from last April's fundraising concert, "Instruments A Comin'." The event, which featured an art auction and performances by Dr. John, Galactic, Cyril Neville, George Porter, Anders Osborne and others, raised $22,000 for student instruments.

Glamour Shots
of Metairie recently held a series of glamour photo sessions, complete with makeovers, for young patients at Children's Hospital. Hospital officials report that being a "model for a day" was a great confidence boost for the kids, many of whom had experienced changes in their appearance following medical treatments. The pictures will be submitted to a national children's photo contest sponsored by Glamour Shots.

Louisiana
ranks eighth in the nation for the number of industries in violation of Clean Water Act permits, according to a study released last week by the nonprofit U.S. Public Interest Research Group. Six Louisiana facilities were in "significant non-compliance" for the entire 15-month period studied, the report says. Seventy-one Louisiana industries were cited during that time for discharging significant amounts of toxins into the environment.

The state Department of Environmental Quality
has such poor record-keeping practices and complicated permit procedures that it's difficult for the general public to work with the agency on permit issues, according to a report by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The federal office called DEQ's public files "unorganized, incomplete, missing or inaccessible" and said permits need to be easier to read. DEQ is responsible for enforcing the federal Clean Air Act.
