The Best and the Worst of the Week

New Orleans' lesbian and gay theater group, was invited to perform at the prestigious Columbus National Lesbian and Gay Theatre Festival this month in Columbus, Ohio. The group will reprise its critically acclaimed performance of the Tennessee Williams play The Traveling Companion, a production that Drama! originally presented in New Orleans last year.
Local judges of the Civil District Court and First and Second City Courts were recently praised by the Governmental Accounting Standards Board for employing its new accounting standards two years earlier than required. The GASB, whose purpose is to improve financial reporting by state and local governments, told the CDC that its early compliance "is a testament to your professional leadership."
Corporate and nonprofit supporters of Louisiana's new campaign to promote wetlands restoration include Tabasco, Shell Oil, Ducks Unlimited and Time magazine. The campaign highlights a federal-state effort to halt the rapid erosion of Louisiana's coastline. The most notable boosts were from Shell, which gave a $3 million grant, and Tabasco, which is adding the campaign's logo to its hot sauce labels.
Louisiana has experienced the worst decline of industry-performed research among Southern states, according to a recent study by the Southern Growth Policy Board. The agency points out that the economic impact of industry-performed research is more rapid than research conducted by other entities. It blamed Louisiana's lag on an economy fueled largely by the petrochemical industry and based on production, instead of on research and development.
