The Wonderful World Jazz Foundation of Japan
is again donating instruments to young jazz musicians in New Orleans schools. Last week, foundation president and vice-president Yoshio and Kaiko Toyama -- musicians and Tokyo residents who lived in New Orleans in the 1960s -- presented 60 instruments to local schools. The Toyamas now play in a New Orleans-style jazz band at Tokyo Disneyland.

Coleman E. Adler & Sons Jewelers
recently donated $20,000 to the Twin Towers Fund established by former New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani. The money came from American-flag lapel pins sold at Adler's since last September. Tiffany Adler presented the money to Giuliani, who was in New Orleans recently to address the Southern Governors' Association. The Twin Towers Fund assists the families of civil servants and government officials who died Sept. 11.

Chanda Rubin ,
the 26-year-old tennis pro from Lafayette who has weathered two knee surgeries in the past year, pushed No. 2 seed Venus Williams to a grueling three sets over three hours last week before losing in the fourth round of the U.S. Open. The 14th-seeded Rubin proved a daunting opponent and was one stroke from serving for victory before losing a 6-2, 4-6, 7-5 decision.

hurt its own efforts to focus public scrutiny on the Audubon Institute by making misleading statements about the salary of Institute CEO Ron Forman. The group protested what it called Forman's "staggering" income leap of 86 percent from 1999 to 2000 without noting that the money was a one-time payout for unused sick and vacation days.
