Third annual conference with workshops, spoken word, music and more with this year's theme, "Pressing Forward From Mediocrity to Might." Conference kicks off at 8 p.m. with jazz spoken word and networking at Loyola, a keynote address with Mayor Ray Nagin at Xavier at 9:45 a.m. Saturday and concluding with a prayer service at 3 p.m. Sunday at Dillard. Registration $15 college students, $10 high school students.

BRIDGE CITY GUMBO FESTIVAL. Angel Square, 1701 Bridge City Ave., Bridge City, 436-4712. Annual event with live music, a fais do do area and food, including gumbo. Free admission. Opens Friday at 6 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m Saturday and 8 a.m. Sunday with closing time of 11 p.m. daily.
