The Best and the Worst of the Week
Ted
Ludwig ,
a graduate student in the University of New Orleans' Department of Music, has
won the national ASCAP Foundation/Louis Armstrong Scholarship for 2002-2003. Ludwig,
a jazz guitarist from St. Bernard, has performed with many notable musicians and
has been asked to contribute to the Mel Bay Publishing Company's "Masters of Jazz
Guitar" series.
The
Ochsner Cancer Institute
has developed a radiation therapy for
breast cancer that has shown promise in reducing the treatment time and side
effects for some patients. Dr. Robert Kuske, a project leader who presented
the study last week to the American Society of Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology,
said patients who have undergone the "brachytherapy" technique, which delivers
high doses of radiation to the tumor site, have had low recurrences of cancer.
Louisiana
legislators
began receiving the $4-per-day pay raise
they gave themselves last session on Oct. 1 -- at the same time Louisiana hit
bottom on two national lists. Last week the national disability rights group
ADAPT ranked Louisiana the worst state for providing community and home-based
care to seniors, and the Corporation for Enterprise Development called Louisiana
the poorest state in the United States with few resources to help residents
improve their status.
Political
candidates
whose campaign signs littered neutral
grounds across the city during last week's election created a tacky mess and
blocked motorists' vision in many areas. Political signs are not even allowed
on public property. Many of the signs stayed up for days after the election.
We hope that during next month's runoff, candidates will use less intrusive
means to advertise their candidacy.
