Reckdahl Honored for 'Indefatigable Reporting'
The Casey Journalism Center on Children and Families
has honored Gambit Weekly contributor Katy Reckdahl with a 2002 Casey Journalism
Center Medal for Distinguished Coverage of Children and Family Issues. The awards,
first presented in 1994, recognize distinguished coverage of children and families
in the United States. Reckdahl received the top national honor for a series of
articles on juvenile justice published in Gambit Weekly in 2001.
"Reckdahl's series of strong reports show
that the juvenile justice system in Louisiana needs more accountability for
how it treats young offenders," wrote the judges in their commendation. "Her
indefatigable reporting is the series' strength."
Previously, Reckdahl's writing on the topic
of juvenile justice earned her top honors from the national Association of Alternative
Newsweeklies and the Press Club of New Orleans. She also received the Media
Award for 2001 from the Mental Health Association in Metropolitan New Orleans.
The Casey Journalism Center on Children and
Families (www.casey.umd.edu)
is a program of the Philip Merrill College of Journalism at the University of
Maryland and is funded by the Annie E. Casey Foundation and The David and Lucile
Packard Foundation. Reckdahl and other Casey Medal winners will be honored at
an awards luncheon in Washington, D.C., on Nov. 1.

CORRECTIONS: In last week's cover
story on Godfrey Reggio ("War and Pieces"), Pope John XXIII's name was incorrectly
reported. Also, the date of the founding of the Christian Brothers was incorrect;
the order was founded in 1680. Gambit Weekly regrets the errors.
