The Best and the Worst of the Week
Tom
Piazza
became a two-time winner of the ASCAP Deems Taylor Award for music writing when
he was named a 2002 recipient of a Special Recognition Award for his article about
collecting 78s titled "Note in a Bottle," published by The Oxford American.
Piazza previously won the award, which is sponsored by the American Society of
Composers, Authors & Publishers, for his 1995 book The Guide to Classic Recorded
Jazz.
Todd Gee ,
a third-year law student at Tulane's
Criminal Law Clinic, recently argued and won a case before the state Supreme
Court on behalf of a man convicted of murder. Gee was asked in his first week
of school to represent Corey Guise, whom he argued was convicted without knowing
his co-conspirators had cut a deal with prosecutors. The high court agreed that
Guise was denied effective legal counsel, and remanded his case back to the
trial court.
Regional
Transit Authority managers
were asked to resign last week in a long-anticipated overhaul of the troubled
agency. The RTA's new chairman, James Reiss Jr., requested the resignations
of RTA general manager Dwight Ferrell and administrators Jerry Reynolds, Mary
Ann Jackson, Michael Darnell and Lisa Bell Burns. Reiss, a Ray Nagin appointee,
said financial and legal problems at the RTA had accelerated under the team's
management.
Otis Henry ,
the
Saints fan who ran onto the field during last week's Saints-49ers game to try
and sign the jersey of a San Francisco player, was apparently mocking 49ers
wide receiver Terrell Owens, who autographed a football post-touchdown during
a recent 49ers-Seahawks game. Henry's stunt earned him a disturbing-the-peace
charge and proved that fans can be no less obnoxious than hype-happy pro football
players.
