1997 Conde de Valdemar Reserva Rioja Spain $14
Rioja, Spain's most predominant red wine-producing area,
lies in the interior of northern Spain on a vast plateau about 1,500 feet above
sea level. Aged nine months in stainless steel followed by 26 months in French
and American oak casks, this Rioja is bottled, then rests in caves for a year
or more before release. A blend of 82-percent Tempranillo (Spain's premier red
grape) and 18-percent Mazuelo, the wine is full bodied and well balanced. It features
even tannins and lush aromas, exhibiting ripe fruit flavors of dark cherry and
plum, with spice and oak notes on the finish. A good accompaniment to duck, roast
beef, pork chops, and Spanish and Mexican food. Available at Prytania Liquor Store
and Dorignac's and by the glass at Dante's Kitchen, Gumbo Shop and Taquero's in
Kenner.
