The Best and the Worst of the Week
The NORD/NOBA Center
for Dance
has
received a $10,000 presidential award for excellence. The program, a partnership
of the New Orleans Recreation Department and the New Orleans Ballet Association,
recently won a 2002 "Coming Up Taller Award" from the President's Committee on
the Arts and the Humanities. Fifteen-year-old dancer Jarrell Hamilton was chosen
to accept the award, presented by actress/choreographer Debbie Allen on Dec. 2
in Washington, D.C.
Kay C. Dee ,
an
assistant professor of biomedical engineering at Tulane University, was named
Louisiana's Professor of the Year by the Council for Advancement and Support
of Education, and the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. The
award is the latest in a string of honors for Dee, who teaches a course on biomedical
themes in science fiction and was honored in 1999 as one of Gambit Weekly's
40 Under 40. Her research explores how cells respond and adapt to their environment.
Local
celebs
lent their time, money and star power
to recent Thanksgiving food giveaways. Saints running back Deuce McAllister
participated in an Albertson's/Coca-Cola turkey giveaway in Mid-City last week,
where he signed autographs and distributed food baskets. Cash Money Records
and Fubu Records also held turkey giveaways last week; label artists distributed
more than 3,000 birds and holiday dinners.
Carl Williams ,
a
former sociology professor at Southern University-Baton Rouge, improperly used
federal money intended for violence-prevention and crimes-against-women programs
he had run, according to Legislative Auditor Dan Kyle. The audit says Williams,
ex-director of the Family and Community Violence Prevention Program and Southern's
Crimes Against Women Program, misused or misrepresented about $15,000 for both
programs.
