The Best and the Worst of the Week
French
Quarter Festivals, Inc.
recently won three awards from the International Festivals and Events
Association. FQF was cited for events in its size category for Best Event Program,
Best Commemorative Poster and Best T-Shirt Design. The IFEA/Haas & Wilkerson Pinnacle
Awards contest honors quality and creativity in the promotional materials and
programs produced by festivals around the world. The competition drew more than
1,300 entries.
Richard
Campanella ,
author of Time and Place in New Orleans: Past Geographies in the Present
Day, has won the 2002 Joseph A. Arrigo Local Book of the Year Award. The
honor is presented by the New Orleans-Gulf South Booksellers Association. Campanella,
of New Orleans, is the assistant director of environmental analysis at the Center
for Bioenvironmental Research at Tulane and Xavier universities.
Harry Blumenthal Jr.
has been named the top volunteer of the year for the United Way of
Greater New Orleans. Blumenthal, president of Blumenthal Print Works in New
Orleans, will receive the Alexis de Tocqueville Award for outstanding service
at the organization's annual celebration Dec. 11 in City Park. The United Way
of Greater New Orleans supports 135 community-building programs and 62 member
agencies in the metro area.
Brian Prince ,
an independent consultant hired by the state Department of Natural Resources
to certify houses as energy-efficient, apparently submitted padded figures and
falsified homeowner signatures to the DNR, according to Legislative Auditor
Dan Kyle. The audit says Prince overcharged DNR's Home Energy Rebate Option
program by nearly $20,000. The program gives rebates to people whose homes meet
efficient energy standards.
