The Best and the Worst of the Week

The New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival
is expanding its 2003 schedule to include an additional day, creating two four-day Jazz Fest weekends. Next year's festival will kick off on Thursday, April 24, instead of on Friday of the first weekend as it has in the past. Fest aficionados are hoping the extra day might help to ease the crowds that have packed the Fair Grounds in recent years to take in the music, food and crafts.

Dr. Michael Sullivan ,
associate chairman of the Department of Radiology at Ochsner Clinic Foundation, recently won the highest honor bestowed by the Radiological Society of North America -- its Gold Medal. Sullivan, who also teaches at Tulane University and Louisiana State University's medical schools, was awarded the prestigious honor for his leadership and devotion to research and education.

The Louisiana Republican Party
shamelessly played the race card and tried to suppress black turnout during the late stages of the Mary Landrieu-Suzanne Terrell runoff election. The state GOP bought signs reading, "Mary: If you don't respect us, don't expect us" and plastered them -- or paid black people to hold them aloft -- in predominantly African-American neighborhoods.

Nicholas S. Morphis
became the first attorney in Louisiana to be disbarred for life recently when the state Supreme Court ordered the Destrehan resident permanently stripped of his license for illicitly pocketing clients' money. The court, which first suspended Morphis in 1997 after five years of practice, found that Morphis lacked "the requisite moral fitness to practice law in this state."
