The Archaeological Institute of America presents Digging into Archaeology: A Hands-on Family Fair, designed as an event for children to learn about the past through hands-on exhibits, meeting with field archaeologists and more. This 14th annual aerobics class is designed just for New Year's resolutions, led by instructors Wacky Wendell and Telly Boneval. Free admission with donation of non-perishable food item or clothing for Unity for the Homeless. 10 a.m. to noon.

BLOOD PRESSURE CHECK. Oakwood Shopping Center, 197 Westbank Expwy., Gretna, 362-1900. West Jefferson Hospital offers blood pressure screenings. Free. 1 p.m. to 2 p.m.

JAZZ AND SPOKEN WORD THROW DOWN. Sweet Lorraine's, 1931 St. Claude Ave., 945-9654. Spoken word with open mic featuring poet Karama Sadaka and live music by Coup d'Fire. Admission $5. 9 p.m. to midnight.

NEW ORLEANS HORNETS. New Orleans Arena, 525-HOOP (4667). Hornets host the Atlanta Hawks. Tickets $7-$265. 7:30 p.m.

LIPIZZANER STALLIONS. Pontchartrain Center, 4545 Williams Blvd., Kenner, 465-9985. "World-famous" Lipizzaner Stallions from Europe appear with music and choreography. Tickets $19.50 adults, $17.50 children 12 and under and seniors. 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Saturday, 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. Sunday.

ARTISTS DEMONSTRATION. New Orleans GlassWorks and Printmaking Studio, 727 Magazine St., 529-7277. Exhibit reception includes demonstration by artists of glassblowing, printmaking and silver sculpting. Free admission. 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

BALL ON THE BELLE. Bally's Casino, One Stars and Stripes Blvd., 240-5167. This 10th annual gala benefits the United Negro College Fund with program "An Evening of Stars: A Celebration of Educational Excellence." Tickets $75 per person. 8 p.m. to midnight.

TRINITY ARTIST SERIES. Trinity Episcopal Church, 1329 Jackson Ave., 670-2520. Concert featuring Beethoven's piano concerto No. 4 with pianists Christopher Astilla and Albinas Prizgintas. Free admission. 5 p.m.

TWELFTH NIGHT BALL. Municipal Auditorium, Coker Room, 525-4498. The Mystic Krewe of Satyricon hosts the First Annual Twelfth Night Ball, with live entertainment by Tommy Elias and His Fancy Band and proceeds benefiting the Buzzy Fanning Foundation. Formal attire, cash bar. Tickets $25. 7 p.m. to 11 p.m.

PET BEREAVEMENT COUNSELING. Offices of Drs. Oprea and Douciere, 3100 Ridgelake Drive, Metairie, 733-7387. The Jefferson SPCA offers pet bereavement seminars for those dealing with the death of a pet. Free admission. 7:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

NEW ORLEANS CHILDREN'S CHORUS AND YOUTH CHORALE. Grace Lutheran Church, 5800 Canal Blvd., 488-5973. The New Orleans Children's Chorus and Youth Chorale will hold auditions beginning Jan. 3 with children ages seven to 18.
