Baker's Dozen
You may officially eat king cake as of this
Monday, Jan. 6, otherwise known as Twelfth Night. To mark the beginning of the
Carnival season and the countdown to Lent, Cobalt inside the Hotel Monaco (333
St. Charles Ave.) will host a Twelfth Night feast this Sunday, Jan. 12. The
two dinner seatings, at 6 p.m. and 8:30 p.m., are planned in conjunction with
a fashion show in the hotel's Paris Ballroom, running from 7:30 p.m. to 10:30
p.m. and featuring Carnival-esque designs by Rosemary Kimble's Enrapturing Revisions.
The fashion show is free to the public; there will be a cash bar during the
show, followed by complimentary Champagne and chocolate-dipped strawberries.
Call 565-5595 for dinner reservations or 800-244-3955 for information.

The Single Gourmet's next culinary outing is
scheduled for this Saturday at Sal & Judy's (27491 Hwy. 190, Lacombe,
985-882-7167), a Creole-Italian institution on the Northshore. The cash bar
opens at 6 p.m., and the dinner begins at 7 p.m. Call 885-1831 for reservations.
Market Watch
If -- for reasons of masochism or self-preservation
-- your New Year's resolution involves dieting or generally becoming more healthful,
look to the new juice purveyors at the Crescent City Farmers Market.
They sell organic carrot juice, apple-lemon juice, apple-lemon-pepper juice
and vegi cocktails by the 1/2 pint, the pint or the quart. Frozen wheatgrass
shots are also available. More news at the market: Mauthe's Dairy gift certificates
are now available; the certificates can be used to purchase Mauthe's Creole
cream cheese, milk, cream and yogurt. Log on at www.mauthescreolecreamcheese.com
for information on the dairy. The Tuesday market is at 200 Broadway St. and
runs from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The Thursday market is at 3700 Orleans Ave. and
runs from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. The Saturday market is at 700 Magazine St. and runs
from 8 a.m. to noon. Call 861-5898 or visit www.loyola.edu/ccfm.
Seeking Comfort
If -- for reasons of masochism or self-preservation
-- your New Year's resolution does not include going on the wagon, the
Southern Comfort Cocktail Tour is in full swing in the French Quarter.
The two-hour walking tour leads guests to famous restaurants and watering holes
such as Galatoire's (209 Bourbon St., 525-2021), Antoine's (713
St. Louis St., 581-4422), Brennan's (417 Royal St., 525-9711) and Lafitte's
Blacksmith Shop (941 Bourbon St., 523-0066). The tour begins daily at 4
p.m. at the Gray Line Lighthouse (at Toulouse Street and the Mississippi River).
For reservations call 569-1401 or log on at www.graylineneworleans.com.
