Marietta Old Vine Red Lot #30
California
$9-$12

Sonoma-based Marietta Cellars in Geyserville, Calif., has come up with an intriguing retro melange to produce this proprietary, non-vintage "old vine" selection. Although there's no set period, most winemakers agree the vines need to be at least 30 years old to earn the "old vine" distinction. Replicating many of the Old Vine vineyards in Napa, Sonoma and Mendocino counties, the wine is a blend of 60 percent Zinfandel, 30 percent Carignane, and 10 percent Grenache and Gamay. At first swirl, spicy aromas and ripe, black berry fruit are present, followed by dense, mouth-filling flavors of blackberries, more spice, and a touch of black pepper. The wine is balanced with an even acidity and rounded tannin structure. Drink now. Great with duck, roast pork with fruit, and venison. Available at Whole Foods locations, Dorignac's and both Martin Wine Cellars.
