2000 E. Guigal Cotes du Rhone (Rouge)
France
$10-$12
Although Wine Spectator's 2002 "Wine of the Year" --
E. Guigal's 1999 Chateauneuf du Pape -- has vanished from retail shelves,
do not despair! Guigal's Cotes du Rhone may be a somewhat lesser-pedigreed
cousin, but it still offers a fruit bomb on the palate and an even greater
value on the pocketbook. Blended from Syrah, Grenache and Mouvedre grapes
plucked from primarily Southern Rhone vineyards. A harmonious union of flavors
with rounded but firm tannins to drink alone or pair with food. Great with
cheese, lamb, cassoulet and Mediterranean cuisine. Available at most Sav-A-Centers,
Prytania Liquor Store, Elio's Wine Warehouse, Dorignac's, Breaux Mart on
Severn Avenue, both Martin Wine Cellar locations, and Byblos Market on Veterans
Memorial Boulevard.
