The Best and the Worst of the Week
Dr. Edward D. Frohlic,
a
professor at Tulane and Louisiana State University's medical schools and
an Alton Ochsner Distinguished Scientist at the Alton Ochsner Medical Foundation
and Ochsner Clinic, recently won the American Heart Association's
Distinguished Achievement Award. Frohlich was recognized for his leadership
within the AHA, his editorship of the AHA scientific journal Hypertension and
his acclaimed clinical studies.
Dan Kyle
resigned
his position as legislative
auditor
on Friday, Jan. 17 -- but not before injuring his office's credibility by
staying on the job as he pondered a run for governor. His announcement earlier
this month that he might enter the race left room for suspicion that the former
auditor's
investigations were politically motivated. Kyle said he resigned in order
to avoid appearance of a conflict of interest -- but by the time he finally
left
office, the damage had already been done. As of presstime, he had not yet
declared his candidacy.
Sabine Transportation Co.,
an Iowa shipping company, last week admitted it illegally dumped tons
of toxic waste into the Mississippi River in 1998. The company pleaded guilty
in federal court to violating the Clean Water Act when workers dumped the waste
from a ship -- which included petroleum and paint residue and rust scale -- near
Violet. Court records show the company may have engaged in other illicit dumping.
The federal Maritime Administration
has
proposed sinking toxic scuttled ships off the Louisiana coast to act as breakwaters
along
the shore, in the hopes they would help slow the rapid erosion of the state's
coastline. The federal agency is responsible for disposing of the ships
-- which contain toxic materials such as asbestos and lead paint -- but
dumping
them off the coast where they could create new problems for the state is
not the answer.
