The Best and the Worst of the Week
Jamal Mashburn,
forward for the New Orleans Hornets, last week was named by NBA coaches to the
Eastern Conference All-Star squad. Mashburn is one of only three players in the
NBA ranked in the top 30 in scoring, rebounding and assists in 2000-01. He becomes
the first New Orleans player to make an NBA All-Star team since Pete Maravich
of the old New Orleans Jazz in 1979.
Michael Osofsky and Arsalan
Suleman have been selected as two of 11 George J. Mitchell Scholars
nationwide. Osofsky, of New Orleans, is a senior at Stanford University; Suleman,
of Kenner, is a senior at Georgetown University. Mitchell Scholarships, granted
by the nonprofit U.S.-Ireland Alliance, are awarded based on academic excellence,
leadership and community service. Winners are awarded a year of post-graduate
study in Ireland or Northern Ireland.
Patricia Clarkson, actress
and daughter of City Council member Jackie Clarkson, received a special-jury
prize for outstanding performance at the Sundance Film Festival last week for
her role in The Station Agent and two other films at Sundance in which
she co-starred, Pieces of April and All the Real Girls. (A fourth
film, The Baroness and the Pig, was previewed at the festival, but was
not in competition.)
Ad Hoc Judge Thomas W. Tanner quietly cut the number of service hours he had ordered for Jonathan Pederson, 20, convicted last year of killing his friend Craig Darce in a drunken boat wreck. Tanner's original sentence for Pederson, stepson of St. Tammany D.A. Walter Reed, was two years' probation and 180 days' community service -- and was criticized at the time as too lenient. He cut the sentence by two-thirds after Pederson's lawyer called it too onerous.
