The Best and the Worst of the Week

Brian Bain,
a filmmaker whose documentary Shalom Y'all has received critical acclaim, has landed his film on the Sundance Channel. Shalom Y'all, a humorous examination of Southern Jewish life, is scheduled to premiere on the cable channel April 12 and will also air on April 17 and 27. Bain, a New Orleans native, has also won a regional Emmy Award for his documentary short film Simon.

State Sen. Paulette Irons
has been chosen as the guest of honor and keynote speaker at the first annual Leadership Training Institute Conference on March 23 in Atlanta. The conference is sponsored by the Georgia Campaign for Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention (GCAPP). At the event, the organization's founder, actress/activist Jane Fonda, is expected to highlight the Louisiana Democrat's work in teen pregnancy prevention.

Bobby Shamburger
last week admitted he helped con $200 million from thousands of investors via the Metairie-based Southshore Holding Co., a group of insurance companies he had co-owned. Shamburger and his associates drained Southshore's subsidiaries of their investments -- including clients' retirement funds, insurance policies and life savings. Shamburger fled the state and assumed a fake identity for six years. He faces sentencing in May.

Louisiana
falls dead last in the country in women- and family-friendly policies, according to the Louisiana Women's Policy and Research Commission. The state group says Louisiana ranks 51st -- behind all states and the District of Columbia -- in the number of women living in poverty. The commission will recommend initiatives designed to improve the lives of Louisiana women and children to the Legislature.
