Tan Dinh serves up Chinese classics and more to diners on the West Bank. Some particularly stand-out dishes are a homemade chicken rice noodle soup, the rice with chicken, half a rotisseried Cornish hen with pickled carrots, daikon, cucumbers, sliced tomatoes and lettuce and the vermicelli with egg rolls and grilled pork paste. Of course you know about Taqueria Corona's renowned combo platters, Numero Uno, Dos and Tres. The Tres boasts portions of tacos, flauta, burrito and a house salad practically big enough to feed the whole family. Tucked in a small strip mall off Veterans Memorial Boulevard, Taqueros Taqueria-Cantina is an unlikely haven for upscale Mexican food. But the proof is in innovative dishes like an appetizer of lobster crepe with chile cream sauce and grilled corn kernels, a prelude to giant sea scallops in a poblano pepper cream sauce, served over rice and crowned spinach. TED'S FROSTOP

Most Uptowners have, at one time or another, been overcome by an insatiable
craving for a castle burger from Ted's Frostop. Ted's has been a fixture on the
quick-serve diner scene since 1955. Hearty breakfasts for a pittance attract
early crowds, and daily lunch specials keep 'em coming back. Regulars say the
Friday special -- shrimp Creole served with rice and potato salad -- is yet another

The West Bank may well be the best bank if you're into Asian cooking. Three Happiness specializes in Chinese favorites, such as the black pepper shrimp, barbecue quail, marinated, roasted and served with a salad, or the West Bank duck, roasted and served with tender steamed vegetables. Chef Tony Mandina and his wife Grace run this Italian eatery on the West Bank. A house special is the Eggplant Dominic Jude, a dish of hand-battered eggplant medallions, layered with shrimp and crabmeat and topped with Alfredo. New Orleans' second-oldest restaurant, Tujague's Restaurant was founded in 1856 by French immigrants Guillaume and Marie Abadie Tujague. The prix fixe menu includes one of the time-tested entrees, shrimp remoulade, Tujague's own traditional beef brisket with Creole sauce, soup, dessert and coffee. A house specialty is the chicken Bonne Femme, pan-fried with lots of garlic and served with cottage potatoes. The bread pudding and pecan pie are among the delectable desserts.
