UGLESICH'S
1238 Baronne St. 523-8571
This New Orleans favorite may be off the beaten track, but somehow it's always packed to the gills come lunchtime. The cafeteria-style service adds to its dive-like charm. Start off with fried oysters with bleu cheese dressing or the creamy oyster brie soup. The shrimp veggie is a popular entree, with shrimp marinated and sauteed with crushed red peppers, hot sauce, onions and bell pepper. No reservations. Lunch Monday through Friday and some Saturdays. Cash only. $$
UGLY DOG SALOON & BBQ
401 Andrew Higgins Drive 569-8459
The Ugly Dog is sitting pretty with its barbecue offerings, such as ribs and pulled pork sandwiches. But they round out their menu with six all-vegetarian side dishes, including the sesame coleslaw. Come for the crawfish boils on Sundays through May, stay to play video games and pool at the two tables. During happy hour (4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday) domestic beers go for $1.25 and imports for $2.25. No reservations. Lunch, dinner and late-night daily. Credit cards. $
UPPERLINE
1413 Upperline St. 891-9822
www.upperline.com
Owner JoAnn Clevenger is celebrating both the Upperline's 20th anniversary this year and the bicentennial of the Louisiana Purchase. Diners get cozy inside the colorful dining room filled with art, and enjoy the Thomas Jefferson dinner: a four-course meal with choices in each category is $38 without wine. One favorite dish is the Louisiana oyster soup; the Cane River Country Shrimp is sauteed shrimp with tons of garlic, mushrooms and Tabasco finished with a shrimp bisque and served on top of fried grit cakes. Reservations recommended. Dinner Wednesday through Sunday. Credit cards. $$$
