HAAGEN-DAZS
1 Poydras St. (Riverwalk Marketplace) 523-3566
621 St. Peter St. 523-4001
8108 Hampson St. 861-1005
Haagen-Dazs' decadent take on ice cream has been in the United States for decades now, but the franchise keeps inventing new flavors to stay fresh. At any area location, sample the Bailey's Shake, featuring Bailey's Irish Cream-flavored ice cream with whipped cream and cookie crumbs. Lunch, dinner and late-night daily. Cash only at St. Peter Street, checks at Hampson, credit cards at Riverwalk. $

HALF SHELL RESTAURANT
111/113 University Place 525-4083
While most people visit the Half Shell to feel that cool, raw oyster goodness slide down their throats, there are plenty of other options to choose from. The barbecue shrimp is a popular appetizer, and the seafood platter can feed one or two people with generous portions of shrimp, oysters, catfish and calamari. No reservations. Breakfast, lunch and dinner daily, late-night Thursday through Saturday. Credit cards. $$

HANA JAPANESE RESTAURANT
8116 Hampson St. 865-1634
The owners of Cafe Zen in Gretna and Kanpai in Mid-City also present this sushi haven in the heart of the relaxed Riverbend shopping district. The Hana Special Roll includes salmon, tuna, snow crab, cucumber, avocado, egg and shrimp tempura, and the miso soup is almost mystically soothing. The chef welcomes adventuresome sushi buffs to take a seat at the bar and let the sushi roll where it may. Reservations recommended for parties of six or more. Lunch and dinner daily. Delivery available. Credit cards. $$

HARBOR SEAFOOD & OYSTER BAR
3203 Williams Blvd., Kenner 443-6454
This block of Williams Boulevard is a seafood hotspot, thanks to the Harbor and the Fisherman's Cove seafood market next door. The Harbor offers boiled crawfish and crabs in season, and boiled shrimp year round, as well as favorites such as turtle soup, seafood po-boys and raw oysters. No reservations. Lunch and dinner daily. Credit cards. $$

HARD ROCK CAFE
418 N. Peters St. 529-5617
www.hardrock.com
Hard Rock Cafe might be the best place in the city for a blind date. An awkward moment can be diffused by a sudden fascination with rock 'n' roll memorabilia ("Wow, to think Jimmy Hendrix actually touched this ..."), and the balcony overlooking Decatur Street provides ample opportunity for people-watching ("Check out that guy covered in blue paint!"). And then the food arrives, including grilled beef, chicken, shrimp or vegetarian fajitas, served with pico de gallo, shredded cheese, quacamole, sour cream and hot tortillas. No reservations. Lunch and dinner daily. Credit cards. $$

HEAVENLY HAM

5300 Tchoupitoulas St. 891-5100
www.heavenlyham.com

No ordinary ham sandwich, the baked ham is the signature dish for good reason. The baked turkey salad sandwich has received rave reviews. Uptowners with guests coming for Jazz Fest or graduation will be glad to know that finger sandwiches are available. Delivery available. No reservations. Lunch daily, early dinner Monday through Saturday. Credit cards and checks. $

HEDGES BAR AND GRILL
4 Galleria Blvd. (Wyndham Hotel), Metairie 620-9412
Situated inside the Wyndham Hotel, Hedges serves up salads, sandwiches and specialty grill items to appreciative customers. Of the brick-oven pizzas, the grilled chicken pizza with goat cheese and sun-dried tomatoes is particularly popular. Reservations recommended. Breakfast, lunch and dinner daily, brunch Sunday. Credit cards. $$

HELL'S KITCHEN
1201 Burgundy St. (inside Cosimo's Bar) 525-HELL (4355)
With a name like this, they couldn't possibly serve up ordinary fare. Grilled hamburgers are for wimps; at Hell's Kitchen the burgers are sizzled in the "flaming pit." A selection of devilishly good pizzas will tempt your soul, but your body sure won't suffer after a taste of the broccoli and cheddar gourmet pizza, made with homemade dough and loaded with fresh flowerets. No reservations. Dinner and late-night daily. Delivery available. Cash only. $

HERBSAINT BAR AND RESTAURANT
701 St. Charles Ave. 524-4114
The imaginative cuisine of Chef Donald Link, helped by business partner Susan Spicer, has pushed Herbsaint to the upper reaches of every food critic's "best of New Orleans" list. Small plates, including the shrimp with green chile grit cakes, can be ordered as an appetizer or at the bar to complement a selection from the ample wine list. Entrees are characterized by elegant presentation and exquisite flavor, as in the Muscovy duck leg confit with dirty rice. Reservations recommended. Lunch Monday through Friday, dinner Monday through Saturday. Credit cards. $$

HERO'S ALL-AMERICAN GRILL
4700 Hwy. 22, Mandeville (985) 845-1000
1211 Village Walk, Covington
www.herosmenu.com

With restaurants in Mandeville and Covington and others scheduled to open soon in Hammond and Slidell, this staunch defender of the American way of eating has taken on the heroic task of feeding the entire Northshore. How? With specialty sandwiches such as the mammoth Archie po-boy, packed with shaved roast beef, ham, turkey, cheddar and Swiss and topped with gravy. No reservations. Lunch and dinner Monday through Saturday. Credit cards. $

HILLBILLY BAR-B-Q

208 Tullulah Ave., River Ridge 738-1508
This 2-year-old-restaurant prepares its meat with care -- the pork shoulders and brisket are smoked over Kentucky hickory for 24 hours. Ribs come on a platter, by the pound or by the rack and can be accompanied by potato salad, barbecue beans, red-wine vinaigrette slaw and a macque choux-like corn salad. Locals in the know ask for the whole bowl potato. It's something like a hot potato salad minus the mayo and mustard, topped with baked-potato favorites sour cream, chives, cheddar cheese and bacon bits. Lunch and dinner Tuesday through Saturday. Credit cards and checks. $

HILLERY'S ON TOULOUSE

827 Toulouse St. (Hotel St. Marie) 571-2888
At Hillery's, Chef Ed Moise is fond of naming his culinary creations after family, so look for the love in tempting dishes like the one named for his granddaughter, the rib eye Amelia, with the charbroiled cut coated in a Worcestershire glaze and served with fresh vegetables. For dessert, try the chocolate flan. Reservations recommended. Breakfast, lunch and dinner Tuesday through Saturday, bar dining only Sunday and Monday. Credit cards. $$

HOBNOBBER CAFE & SPORTS GRILL
2544 Williams Blvd., Kenner 443-0016
Cheer on your team while noshing on down-to-earth fare, including po-boys, plate lunch specials or the ever-popular spaghetti and meatballs. One sandwich to remember is the Cuban version, featuring ham and cheese warmed on toasted French bread. Reservations accepted. Lunch Monday through Saturday, dinner Thursday through Friday. Credit cards. $

HOME FURNISHINGS STORE CAFE

1600 Prytania St. 566-1707
For 26 years, this cafe has been pleasing hungry shoppers with a sophisticated menu chock-full of items that fall in the $6-$10 range. Located on the second floor of a furniture store, the cafe serves daily specials and hot lunch entrees such as the breaded pork loin, which comes with pasta and green beans, or the eggplant Parmesan. No reservations. Lunch Monday through Saturday. Cash and checks. $

HOOTERS
301 N. Peters St. 522-9222
2781 Belle Chasse Hwy., Gretna 393-7177
4748 Veterans Memorial Blvd., Metairie 889-0160
www.hooters.com
The Hooters menu recognizes the importance of getting together with friends -- at least, we hope folks aren't eating the 50-piece order of "nearly world famous" chicken wings alone. The choice sauces, ranging from mild to 9-1-1, is a great chance to test your companions' mettle. Reservations for large parties only. Lunch and dinner daily, late-night Monday through Saturday. Credit cards. $

HORINOYA
920 Poydras St. 561-8914
Horinoya is a pleasant, serene dining experience. A long list of sushi rolls is offered, featuring classic rolls such as the California Roll as well as daily chef's creations. Start with a seaweed salad or fresh tempura. For those not sushi inclined, Horinoya offers noodle dishes and other Japanese delights. Reservations accepted. Lunch Monday through Friday, dinner daily. Credit cards. $$

HOUSE OF BLUES
225 Decatur St. 529-BLUE (2583)
www.hob.com
The food at House of Blues (HOB) is inspired by classic Southern cooking, but it's as diverse as the club's musical acts. HOB staples include the "Elwood" blackened chicken sandwich and the slow-smoked baby-back ribs, but you can get eclectic with pan-seared voodoo shrimp with rosemary cornbread and Dixie beer reduction. Reservations recommended. Lunch and dinner daily, brunch Sunday. Credit cards. $$

HOUSTON'S
4241 Veterans Memorial Blvd., Metairie 889-2301
1755 St. Charles Ave. 524-1578
www.houstons.com

This family-friendly restaurant serves great food in a casual dining atmosphere. A variety of grilled fish, steaks, burgers and salads cover the basics, and the barbecue ribs let you get your fingers sticky. Finish the meal with a five-nut brownie or an apple-walnut cobbler. No reservations. Lunch and dinner daily. Credit cards. $$

HOWL AT THE MOON
135 Bourbon St. 410-9000
www.howlatthemoon.com
Dueling pianos and raucous sing-a-longs are Howl at the Moon's stock-in-trade, but you gotta keep your throat well-lubricated and stomach full for all the festivities. Bar food staples abound, from chicken wings and fingers, jambalaya, and barbecue shrimp, to etouffee and po-boys. No reservations. Lunch menu always available, dinner daily, late-night Friday and Saturday. Credit cards. $

HUGH'S WINE CELLAR
4250 Hwy. 22, Mandeville (985) 626-0066
www.hughswinecellar.com
Hugh has fostered the perfect laid-back environment that truly enables you to enjoy your wine and food. Dine in or take the prepared foods with you. You may even nip at a bottle of wine if you can't wait until you get home. The Mediterranean salad is a mix of shrimp, artichoke hearts, hearts of palm, romaine, sprouts and feta cheese dressing; chicken salad is made with green onions, black olives and almonds. No reservations. Lunch Monday through Saturday. Credit cards and checks. $

HUNT ROOM GRILL
214 Royal St. (Hotel Monteleone) 523-3341
www.hotelmonteleone.com
Chef Randy Buck creates classic Creole dishes with a twist for this elegant restaurant. The stuffed shrimp Bienville is served with a stuffing of shrimp and fresh crabmeat and topped with hollandaise; and the almond snapper, lightly coated with almonds and pan-fried is served in a white wine cream sauce. For starters, try the crabcakes or turtle soup. Reservations recommended. Dinner daily. Credit cards. $$$
