Getting Jazzed
Elizabeth's (see Restaurant
Review), generally a breakfast and lunch spot, will open for dinner during Jazz
Fest "for good, old-fashioned sustenance." Start
planning now for the Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays surrounding the Fest:
April 17, 18, 19; April 24, 25, 26; and May 1, 2 and 3.
Food and Music
Elizabeth's is also one of 60 local restaurants setting up at this weekend's
French Quarter Festival, sometimes called the world's largest jazz brunch.
Priced between $2 and $6, the hodgepodge of traditional and far-out dishes
includes beef brisket with horseradish sauce from Tujague's (823 Decatur St.,
525-8676), crawfish fried rice from Wasabi (900 Frenchmen St., 943-9433), grilled
chicken livers with sweet-hot pepper jelly from Praline Connection (542 Frenchmen
St., 943-3934) and Oreo cookie bread pudding with ice cream from La Chatelaine
at the Chateau Sonesta Hotel (800 Iberville St., 586-0800). The festival runs
from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday through Sunday in Jackson Square and at the Louisiana
State Museum's Old U.S. Mint; and from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday,
and from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday, in Woldenberg Riverfront Park.
Just Cause
Thursday marks Cafe Reconcile's (1631 Oretha Castle Haley Blvd., 568-1157)
next Celebrity Chef Night: an oyster extravaganza courtesy Acme Oyster House
(724 Iberville St., 522-5973; 7306 Lakeshore Drive, 282-9200; 519 East Boston
St., Covington, 985-898-0667). The raw bar will open at 6:30, followed by dinner
at 7 p.m. The cost is a $50 donation to the cafe, where at-risk youth receive
education and training in the hospitality industry. In related news, Cafe Reconcile
is now accepting credit cards. And you can look forward to smothered chicken,
smothered pork chops, greens and cornbread -- all of which will debut at the
cafe's first-annual Jazz Fest booth at Heritage Square.
Jumping Through Hoops
Bourbon House (144 Bourbon St., 522-0111) wants to feed you hoops and oysters
during the remaining Hornets away games on Sunday, April 13, at 5 p.m., and
on Monday, April 14, at 6:30 p.m. Oysters, a 7-foot projection television,
and appetizer and drink specials are on the menu. Also enter to win tickets
to home games, including a VIP parking pass.
Change of Ownership
I was getting ready to write about the lasagnas made with fresh pasta, the
prosciutto and Fontina panini and the smooth Illy coffees at Giacomino (808
Common St., 524-3419), a mostly take-out Italian cafe in the CBD, when I learned
that it changed ownership. Ally Le and Tommy Chan bought the business last
week and plan to tweak the focus to Italian-Asian fusion. Exactly what that
means remains to be seen. For now the cafe's business hours remain 7 a.m. to
3 p.m. Monday through Friday.
