New at Jazz Fest

While food at Jazz Fest seems a constant, there are subtle changes in food items and vendors each year. Here are some examples. New item/new vendor: roast beef po-boy, DiMartino's Famous Muffulettas in Gretna. New item/returning vendor: fried eggplant with crawfish, Love at First Bite; coconut shrimp, Red Fish Grill; shrimp and eggplant parmigiana, Barreca's, Metairie; tagine of lamb (lamb stew wit basmati rice) and Tunisian salad, Jamila's Cafe; and cherry pie, Mr. William's Pastries. Returning item/new vendor: muffaletta/vegetarian muffaletta, DiMartino's; crawfish etouffee, Popeye's; and smothered pork chops, smothered chicken, greens and cornbread, Cafe Reconcile.

Pitching In

The new Whole Foods Market (5600 Magazine St., 899-9119) will donate 5 percent of its sales on Wednesday, April 23, to the YWCA's Rape Crisis Program. Money from the sales will go toward the program's Rape Crisis Phone Line, counseling services, and medical and legal advocacy. Considering that the YWCA provides these services free of charge and 24/7 -- and money's tight these days -- every little bit helps. So you have yet another excuse to stock up for Jazz Fest.

Through the Grapevine

Martin Wine Cellar presents "A Taste of America: Reds, Whites and You" -- a massive pairing of wine and food -- at its Uptown location (3827 Baronne St., 897-0191). More than 20 American wines from such producers as Chappelet, Domaine Serene and Murphy Goode will be available, along with a variety of cheeses and food prepared by Martin's chefs. The $30 tickets include a $5 gift certificate to be used toward the purchase of any wine valued at $20 or more; they're available at either Martin's location. Speaking of Martin's, the Uptown location will feature a cooking demonstration from Bittersweet Plantation's John Folse, while the Metairie location (714 Elmeer Ave., Metairie, 899-7411) features its own Mike Hampton. Both demonstrations are noon to 2 p.m. Saturday.

Market Watch

The Crescent City Farmers Market will join the Mayor's Office of Environmental Affairs in celebrating Earth Day on Tuesday, April 22, at the market's 200 Broadway St. location. The celebration includes exhibits, Free Trade vendors and children's activities. Rebel Seafood's Kay Brandhurst will present April's Green Plate special. The fun goes from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday's market at 3700 Orleans Ave. will be open from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday's market at 700 Magazine St. features Bull's Corner in LaPlace chef Richard Kiral presenting his annual Jazz Fest cooking demonstration.
