Strength in Numbers

Chef/entrepreneur Susan Spicer is teaming up with every good man behind her for a special dinner May 8 at Cobalt (333 St. Charles Ave., 565-5595) to benefit Share Our Strength, which fights hunger. Spicer will be joined by Cobalt Chef Brack May, Herbsaint Executive Chef Donald Link and Bayona Chef de Cuisine Jeremy Gresham in preparing the dinner. Dishes include a grilled boneless leg of lamb Moroccan style (by Gresham), wild Pacific salmon with marinated lentils (by Link), softshell crab with corn and country ham broth (by May), and pecan roulade with praline mousse and Louisiana strawberries (Spicer). All chefs will pitch in their own version of hors d'oeuvres, with wine provided in part by Brown-Forman. Cost is $75 inclusive.

The Tom Club

Visitor Publishing's purchase of New Orleans Gourmet Magazine translates to one big-time change: the hiring of local restaurant critic Tom Fitzmorris as its editor. No stranger to the biz, Fitzmorris, who has been writing since 1972, founded New Orleans Menu Magazine in 1977, and has been a fixture on WSMB's Food Show since 1988, among many other ventures.

The Galatoire's Logs

Hmmm, it's dismissed as coincidence: Galatoire's, still on tip of everyone's lips with Chris Rose's constant remounting of The Galatoire's Monologues, has been nominated for the James Beard's S. Pellegrino Outstanding Restaurant Award. The honor, according to a press release, goes to "the restaurant in the U.S. that serves as a national standard bearer of consistency of quality and excellence in food, atmosphere and service." Oh, if only they knew what the atmosphere and service used to be like. The other nominees: Topolobampo, Chicago; Chanterelle, New York City; Valentino, Los Angeles; Zuni Cafe, San Francisco. The winner will be announced May 5.

Mothers of Invention

Several restaurants are gearing up for Mother's Day (May 11) with an array of special meals planned. Mr. B's (201 Royal St., 523-2078) features an asparagus and crab bisque, Parmesan-crusted redfish and a crabmeat omelette. The InterContinental Hotel (444 St. Charles Ave., 525-5566) is not only offering a Mother's Day Champagne Jazz Brunch in the La Salle Ballroom, but also is providing a weekend getaway for Mom: $99 per night, May 9 through May 12, with all the amenities. Also, GW Fins (911 Iberville St., 581-FINS) is offering new dishes for the big day, including a salad of Creole tomatoes, asparagus and fresh hearts of palm with lump crabmeat topping, or a butter poached Maine lobster risotto.
