Mother's Lode
Though most mothers might prefer a stack of homemade pancakes and the Sunday paper in bed, alone, the following restaurants are prepared to accommodate more elaborate Mother's Day dining plans. At the Sazerac, inside the Fairmont Hotel (123 Baronne St., 529-4733), indulge in a champagne brunch buffet and the music of Sullivan Dabney and his Muzik Jazz Band. Seatings are at 10:30 a.m., 12:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m.; $38 for adults, $32 for senior citizens, $21 for children 6 to 12 and free for children under 5. Mr. John's Steak and Seafood (2111 St. Charles Ave, 679-7697) is also offering a champagne brunch buffet, from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.; $24.95 for adults, $21.95 for senior citizens, $12.95 for children 3 to 12 and free for children under 3. At Cafe Giovanni (117 Decatur St., 529-2154), Chef Duke LoCicero is serving three-course meals from noon to 4 p.m., accompanied by live opera music; $45 for adults and $12 for children under 10. At Mr. B's Bistro (201 Royal St., 523-2078), three-course dinners will be offered from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Drag queen Bianca Del Rio will host "Mommie Dearest Mother's Day," a campy three-course brunch at Zoe Bistrot (333 Poydras St., 525-9444), beginning at 11 a.m.; $28. GW Fins (808 Bienville St., 581-3467) will offer an a la carte menu from noon to 11 p.m. Beginning on Mother's Day, Emeril's Restaurant (800 Tchoupitoulas St., 528-9393) will open every week for Sunday dinner from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Home Sweet Home
Or, for a Mother's Day feast at home, stock up on peas, strawberries, guinea hens, ricotta cheese, pies and flowers at Saturday's Crescent City Farmers Market. Chef Tommy DiGiovanni of Arnaud's (813 Bienville St., 523-5433) will conduct a cooking demonstration at 10 a.m. The Saturday market is at 700 Magazine St. and runs from 8 a.m. to noon. Call 861-5898 or visit www.loyola.edu/ccfm.

Early Riser If my own mother were in town (she rises too early for breakfast in bed -- the Sunday paper isn't even printed yet), I would treat her to calas at Elizabeth's (601 Gallier St., 944-9272), to fresh-pressed juices and excellent drip coffee at Surrey's (1418 Magazine St., 524-3828) or to dim sum at Ding How (3117 Houma Blvd., Metairie, 887-9616).

Buy the Bushel!

Congratulations to Boyd Bulot of Hammond, who set a world record and won the 2003 Acme Oyster House World Oyster Eating Competition on Saturday, April 12, by downing 18 dozen Louisiana oysters in just 10 minutes.
