Bowled Over

The long-awaited (by me, at least) cookbook New Orleans by the Bowl (Ten Speed Press, $17.95), written by John DeMers with Chef Andrew Jaeger, has finally hit the market. Though I have yet to test any of the recipes, a few by-the-bowl meals at Jaeger's former Back Kitchen restaurant cause me to look forward to trying his brown jambalaya, turkey and sausage gumbo and rabbit sauce piquante. The 110 recipes, spanning 156 photo-less pages, appear straightforward -- the kinds of recipes that bid you to stop reading and start cooking.

Ripe Opportunity

There's a season for everything in New Orleans, from crawfish to king cake. May happens to be wine season, as the New Orleans Wine & Food Experience, one of the country's largest wine events, runs from Wednesday, May 21, through Sunday, May 25. The several ways in which to participate in the Bacchanalian event include grand tastings and seminars held at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center; vintner dinners at 42 local restaurants; the Royal Street Experience, for which all of Royal Street becomes a wine bar; and the wrap-up Champagne Jazz Brunch at the Omni Royal Orleans Hotel. For more information and to purchase tickets, call 529-WINE (9463) or log on at www.nowfe2.com. Proceeds from the Experience benefit the Louisiana Restaurant Association's School to Career Program. (For more NOWFE information, see special pullout section in this issue.)

Through the Grapevine

Stop by either Martin Wine Cellar location (3827 Baronne St., 899-7411; 714 Elmeer Ave., Metairie, 896-7300) to pick up tickets for Once Upon a Vine IX, to be held from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday, June 8, at City Park's Pavilion of the Two Sisters. Participants will have the opportunity to taste more than 150 wines (you might consider paring the selection down to your favorite 75 or so), and Martin's catering staff will see to it that everyone gets plenty to eat. The limited-quantity $60 tickets include a $10 gift certificate to either store location; see a Martin manager to purchase.

Continuing Education

The Savvy Gourmet's Grandma Series cooking classes continue this month and next with "Your Spanish Grandmother" on Thursday, May 22, and "Your Thai Grandmother" on Thursday, June 5. Chef Stephen Hassinger of Cafe Degas (3127 Esplanade Ave., 945-5635) is the grandmother in charge; classes take place from 7 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at LuLu's (307 Exchange Alley, 525-2600). The cost is $60 per person, $110 for two. To sign up for the Grandma Series, or for information about Savvy Gourmet's ongoing Fundamentals of Cooking classes, call 482-3726 or log on at www.savvy-gourmet.com.
