Bill Hines
has been named Humanitarian of the Year by the American Red Cross' Southeast Louisiana chapter. Hines, an attorney and native New Orleanian, is chairman of MetroVision. He has taken on leadership positions for several local nonprofits, including the 2003 campaign chairmanship for the United Way of Greater New Orleans.

Coleman Adler, Joseph Canizaro and Bill Goldring,
through their company, River Park Partnership, have donated a 5.25-acre, $7.4-million parcel of riverfront property to Tulane University. The land, adjacent to the Morial Convention Center under the Delta Queen River Boat Terminal, will be used as a site for a research, education and arts center called "RiverSphere," devoted to culture, science and technology related to the Mississippi River.

Pro Bono Publico Award winners
for outstanding service were recently named by AIDSLaw of Louisiana. The awards by the nonprofit provider of legal services to HIV-positive patients went to: Jane E. Martin, N.P., project director for the Delta Region AIDS Education and Training Center; Dr. James and Debby Osterberger, who run a Baton Rouge medical practice with emphasis on HIV; and attorney Brigette Maria Piattoly, who represents many underprivileged clients.

Adrenetta McGhee,
a former assistant in the New Orleans city attorney's housing unit, will serve 18 months in jail for charging fees for legal advice to citizens interested in buying blighted property. McGhee is not an attorney, and as a public official was not allowed to charge people for legal help, says the U.S. Attorney's office, who nabbed her as part of its ongoing probe into corruption in city government. McGhee was also ordered to pay $4,675 in restitution.
