Gambit Weekly Wins Awards

Gambit Weekly was honored with the Ashton Phelps Sr. Memorial Award and seven first-place awards at the Press Club of New Orleans' 45th annual awards ceremony held Saturday, May 31, at the Astor Crowne Plaza Hotel.

For the second year in a row, Katy Reckdahl and Clancy DuBos received the Ashton Phelps Sr. Memorial Award for Editorial Writing, this year for a Commentary on literacy in New Orleans. Gambit Weekly also received second and third places in the "Editorial" category, for work by Allen Johnson Jr. and Clancy DuBos, and Katy Reckdahl and Clancy DuBos, respectively.

Gambit Weekly also swept the "Critical Review" category, with arts & entertainment editor David Lee Simmons winning first place for his film writing, and food critic Sara Roahen and music editor Scott Jordan winning second and third place, respectively.

In the category "Investigative," Clancy DuBos and Allen Johnson Jr. won first place for the story "The Perils of Paulette." Allen Johnson Jr. also won second place in the category for his story "The Secret Files of Peter Munster."

Staff writer Eileen Loh Harrist also won multiple awards in the same category. With co-writer Christie Buckner, she won first place in "Special Interest" for the medical story "The Silent Killer"; Loh Harrist won second place for "The Best Medicine."

First place honors also went to artist Rhett Thiel in "Editorial Illustration" for his cover drawing "Building a Better Mousetrap," to Greg Peters in "Cartooning" for his weekly "Suspect Device," and to editor Michael Tisserand in the "Headlines" category. Eileen Loh Harrist, David Lee Simmons, Katy Reckdahl, Clancy DuBos, Scott Jordan each received additional second- and third-place awards.
