The Best and the Worst of the Week
Patricia
Arceneaux , a teacher at Our Lady of Divine Providence School in Metairie,
was among 56 educators nationwide to have been named a James Madison Fellow for
2003. The awards are distributed by the James Madison Memorial Fellowship Foundation
of Washington, D.C. to further the study of American history by college graduates
and experienced teachers. Arceneaux's fellowship will fund up to $24,000 toward
a master's degree.
Bill
Quigley, a Loyola University law professor, has won the 2003 Pax
Christi USA Pope Paul VI Teacher of Peace Award. The honor is given to one who
embodies the message: "To reach peace, teach peace." Quigley was recognized
for his work with the School of the Americas Watch, the National Association
for the Advancement of Colored People, and his efforts to abolish the death
penalty and provide legal help for low-income people.
Louisiana State Bar Association award winners
were named recently at the LSBA's annual meeting.
Honorees were: John Weigel for excellence in trial practice; Judith Gainsburgh,
Kym Krystyna Keller and Lawrence Centola Jr. for advancing the LSBA's mission
and goals; Bryan DeTray for his contribution to the Louisiana Bar Journal;
Ellen Katz for her devotion to public interest law; and C. Peck Hayne, John
McAuliffe Jr., and Krebs, Farley & Pelleteri LLC for pro bono work.
Rodney Loar, who operated a Metairie insurance
agency, admitted he took money from customers but didn't insure them. Loar's
fraud came to light between 2000 and 2001, when A-First Metro Insurance Agency
customers were involved in car accidents and subsequently learned they weren't
insured. Loar pleaded guilty last week to theft and forgery charges. He was
ordered to repay nearly $10,000 in fake premiums and to pay for the clients' auto damage.
