2002 Boschendal Grande Cuvee Sauvignon Blanc
Coastal Region, South Africa
$13-$15

South Africa's tumultuous 300-plus-year winemaking history continues to evolve with many of the country's wines gaining respectability in the marketplace. Virtually unavailable in the United States for a decade prior to 1991, a number of South African wines have fared well in comparison tastings, especially Sauvignon Blanc. Made from grapes grown on hillside vineyards and mountain slopes along South Africa's 1,800 mile coast, this wine is 100 percent Sauvignon Blanc, vinified in stainless steel, temperature-controlled tanks. The first impression the wine imparts is its freshness, followed by grapefruit, limestone, a touch of spice, herbal notes, tropical fruit aromas and flavors and a fresh acidity. Good with smoked fish, Asian cuisine, creamy pasta dishes, seafood, chicken and pork. Available at Cork & Bottle, Bacchanal, Dorignac's and Louisiana Star in Covington.
