2001Yangarra Park Shiraz
South Eastern Australia
$6-$8

Shiraz, the same grape as Syrah -- best known for the celebrated, opulent, wines of Northern Rhone, was introduced to Australia around 1790 and now is the most widely planted red varietal in that country. On the palate, Australian Shiraz is sweeter, riper, shows more forward fruit and is more suggestive of chocolate than the pepper and spices often associated with Rhone's Syrahs. This wine, from 100 percent Shiraz fruit from premier coastal appellations, offers rich aromas of dark cherry, licorice and spice followed by flavors of ripe plums with nuances of pepper and vanilla oak. Good with grilled meats and vegetables, pasta, spicy foods and Mediterranean cuisine. Available at most Sav-A-Centers, Winn-Dixies, Robert's Fresh Market on Robert E. Lee Boulevard, Lakeview Fine Foods, Dorignac's and Acquistapace's Covington Super Market. -- Brenda Maitland
