2000 Tenuta dell'Ornellaia Le Volte
Tuscany, Italy $20-$22
Ornellaia, first produced in 1985, is Tuscany's second extraordinary red, planted near the much-heralded Sassicaia a few miles from the Tuscan coast. Like Sassiciaia, LeVolte unites the noble Tuscan grape, Sangiovese, with Cabernet Sauvignon, but Merlot is added as well. Le Volte's blend is 40 percent Sangiovese with 30 percent each of Cab and Merlot. The wine is aged in barriques for about nine months and then rests in the bottle for several more months prior to release. The bouquet displays red berry fruit with hints of violets, followed by opulent, deep fruit with herbal notes on the palate. A well-balanced, harmonious wine with good structure and complexity. Good with grilled or roasted meats and fowl, saucy pasta dishes, and grilled vegetables. Available at Sidney's Wine Cellar, Vieux Carré Wine and Spirits, Elio's Wine Warehouse, and Cork & Bottle.
