Road Trip
African-American students pursuing a college degree in the food arts, hospitality management, folk arts or some related field are eligible for a free ride (including travel and accommodations), compliments of Glory Foods, to the fifth annual Southern Foodways Symposium to be held Oct. 2-5 in Oxford, Miss. This year's conference will explore the people, places and traditions of Appalachia. Last year's theme was barbecue, and like last year, food and eating will be of utmost importance. Scholarships will be awarded to the three students with the best 250-word responses to the following questions: what particular characteristics do you ascribe to Appalachian cookery? How have Southern food habits and traditions impacted our national cuisine? How would you benefit from a four-day conference that explores Southern food and culture? Contestants should email responses or questions to sfamail@olemiss.edu by Sept. 5. For more information log on at www.southernfoodways.com or call 662-915-5993. The full value of each scholarship is $860.\

Food for Thought
Twenty percent of the proceeds from Kelsey's (3923 Magazine St., 897-6722) brunch on Sunday, Sept. 7, will go towards the American Stroke Association and the efforts of a four-person marathon team training to run in the association's Walt Disney World Marathon to be held in Orlando, Fla., in January. Eddie Esposito, who owned the now-closed Portobello Cafe, suffered a stroke this year at the age of 44. His wife, Ann Rogers, is on the marathon team. At $35 per person, Kelsey's Sunday brunch includes omelettes cooked to order, a carving station, grillades and cheese grits, raw and boiled seafood and unlimited Champagne and mimosas. Call the restaurant for reservations.

Tour Guide
At press time there were still tickets available to the Tour of the Five Continents of Fine Wine, a charity event to be held next Tuesday, Sept. 9, beginning at 6:30 p.m. at the Intercontinental Hotel (444 St. Charles Ave.). Benefiting Cafe Reconcile and the Educational Fund of the Louisiana Restaurant Association, the evening will include a cooking competition between chefs from Pascal's Manale, Acme Oyster House, Andrea's and Food Art catering, among many other restaurants and catering companies. The competing dishes will be paired with wines from around the globe, and door prizes include trips to northern California's wine country. Tickets cost $100. Call 309-1920 or email wine@lra.org.
