2002 Alexander Valley Chardonnay
Wetzel Family Estate, Sonoma, California
$12-$16

The winery's owners, the Wetzel Family, were pioneers in developing vineyards in this premiere American Viticultural Area. Seventy percent of the wine was fermented in stainless steel with the remaining 30 percent barrel-fermented and aged for nine months in 1- and 2-year-old French oak. Full-bodied with balanced acidity, the wine offers complex aromas of mandarin orange, pineapple and a touch of citrus followed by crisp apple and pear flavors. A rich wine with a lengthy finish, its good with trout Meuniere, fried softshell crabs with beurre blanc, pasta with shrimp and other seafood dishes. Available at both Whole Foods Market locations, Dorignac's and Martin Wine Cellar in Metairie.
