While it's often considered the social event of
the season, Hibernia's should not be forgotten as the visual arts event of the
season. The event, co-sponsored by the Contemporary Arts Center, takes advantage
of the (slightly) cooler temperatures to allow thousands of visitors to enjoy
the featured exhibitions of the fall at galleries citywide. Julia Street, Magazine
Street, Oretha Castle Haley Boulevard, the French Quarter and beyond all come
alive, showcasing the latest works, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 4.
To make a very special day that much more special, the CAC
(900 Camp St., 528-3805) welcomes the return of New Orleans favorite, singer-songwriter,
pianist and (finally!) Oscar-winning film composer Randy Newman for a 10 p.m.
concert. But if you just want to pop in and check out the CAC's latest exhibits
(see below), that's OK, too. Cash bars and food will be available throughout
the evening inside and out on the streets.
From 6 p.m. to 1 a.m., free continuous shuttle bus service
will be provided for patrons, running between Magazine Street, the Renaissance
Arts Hotel (700 Tchoupitoulas St.) and the CAC.
Hibernia Art for Arts' Sake gallery openings
citywide are from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. unless otherwise noted.
