Sometimes the secret to looking as fashionable
as you feel comes down to finding the right store where you can assemble nicely
fitting ensembles for occasions from casual to cocktails. For young women, or
those who are young at heart, there is Judith B's (2700 Metairie Road,
Metairie, 838-7166).
The year-old shop in Old Metairie carries fashions for juniors
in sizes 00 to 18, covering the bases from casual outfits for young girls and
teenagers to collegiate styles.
"The clothes are trendy but wearable," says
owner Judith Dazet, who also owns Pogo clothing store in Mandeville. "We have
the latest trends in fashion for the younger teenagers as well as college career
fashions. It's for ladies who like the younger in-style fashion." These range
from pre-teens who can slip on the 00 sizes to college students preparing for
first jobs to more mature-aged women who can take advantage of the extended
sizes to find young-spirited fashions that fit.
Along with jeans, T-shirts, blouses, skirts,
dresses, jackets and other clothing, Judith B's also carries some shoes, watches,
hats, gloves, handbags, scarves and shawls, jewelry and dresser-top accessories.
Brand names include shoes by Dollhouse and Jeffrey Campbell and clothing by
diverse makers such as Hollywood, Jump, Shine, Ido and more.
"We try to do a little bit of everything,"
she says, "and then also some basics, like the little dress that will take you
anywhere."
The real focus is on the clothes and Dazet's
desire to present fashion-forward options to young girls while staying away
from the overly revealing styles that are popular.
"I like to help girls to look pretty, feel
feminine ... and respectable," she says. "They can dress feminine and pretty
while still maintaining their modesty."
So if the owner's last name is Dazet, where
does the B in Judith B's come from? "It stands for blessed," she says. "I've
been very blessed in my life. God has truly blessed me."
Digging Into Fall
Gardeners (and those who simply enjoy the results
of the work of gardeners) can get growing tips, decorating ideas, loads of information
and lots of inspiration at the 2003 Fall Garden Show from 10 a.m. to
5 p.m. Oct. 18 and 19 at the New Orleans Botanical Garden in City Park.
Scores of exhibitors, ranging from rose and
orchid clubs and growers to retailers selling fertilizer and sprinkler systems,
will be on hand as well as horticulturists, garden and landscaping experts and
more. The show also features a large sales area, a plant health clinic, soil
testing, educational speakers and a kid's discovery area with crafts, activities
and games for the young set.
Admission is $6 adults, $2 children 5 to 12

Essence of Style
Longue Vue House and Gardens (7 Bamboo
Road, 488-5488) presents its 12th annual Fall Symposium "The Essence of Style
II" from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 15.
The symposium, which will explore ways to
express individual style, includes expert speakers representing various fields
as well as workshops by local artists Cole Pratt and Grace Newburger. Participants
also will be treated to a gourmet catered lunch, a fabrics fashion show, plant
sale and music by the SLU String Quartet. Participants also will be able to
tour the exhibit It's a Small World: Dollhouse China and Glass in the Longue
Vue Collection on display in the house.
Admission is $95 ($85 for Longue Vue members).

Old House on the Block
The holidays and the many celebrations that

Honor Award for Special Projects from the Louisiana Preservation Alliance --
is outfitted in period antiques and offers elegant banquet space, party and
reception facilities, intimate parlors and catering by The Bombay Club Restaurant
and Martini Bistro next door. It can accommodate parties of most sizes and types.
